Description
The ALCB Herbarium was founded in 1950 by Prof. Dr. Alexandre Leal Costa and was initially conceived to house several historical collections, including those of the Joaquim Monteiro Caminhoá Herbarium (Faculty of Medicine of Bahia – established in 1808 upon the arrival of D. João VI in Brazil), the Herbarium of the Faculty of Philosophy of UFBA (also initiated in 1808), the Herbarium of Colégio Padre Antonio Vieira (founded in 1911), and the collection of Pierre Verger (1902–1996). Verger, an ethnographer, photographer, anthropologist, historian, ethnobotanist, and professor at UFBA, collected plants from candomblé terreiros in Bahia. He personally donated his complete collection to the ALCB Herbarium in 1976, which represents an important part of the cultural and historical heritage of the people of Bahia. The ALCB collection comprises approximately 136,087 specimens, making it the 14th largest herbarium in Brazil and the third largest in Bahia. It includes specimens from all ecosystems in the state, the largest bryophyte collection in the Brazilian Northeast, the fourth-largest marine macroalgae collection in Brazil (and the largest in the North and Northeast regions), and the most extensive collection of macroscopic fungi in the Northeast. Lastly, the ALCB collection is fully digitized, with 37% of the specimens photographed in high definition (HD). The database and images are available on four digital platforms, including speciesLink, SiBBr, Reflora, and GBIF.

Data Records
The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 109,437 records.
2 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
