Description

The HCF Herbarium was founded in the year 2000 and was the first biological collection established among the 13 campuses of UTFPR. Until 2003, it remained at approximately 500 samples. From 2003 onwards, with support from the campus administration, regular collections began across the state of Paraná and other Brazilian states. It is currently directly linked to the General Directorate of the Campo Mourão Campus at the Federal University of Technology – Paraná. The herbarium serves researchers and students from the Environmental Engineering program at UTFPR, as well as researchers and students from other institutions. It maintains exchange and loan programs for botanical material with 32 national institutions. Since 2008, it has been registered in the Index Herbariorum. The herbarium has collaborated with the Paraná Water and Land Institute (IAT) in surveying the flora of regional conservation units and providing technical reports to support ecosystem conservation. This includes providing a scientific basis for the creation of new conservation units and reports that support environmental violation notices in cases of crimes against flora, responding to demands from the Environmental Military Police and the State Public Prosecutor's Office of Paraná. The collection includes a broad sampling of the well-known Cerrado of Campo Mourão, the Iguaçu National Park, and regional, municipal, and state conservation units.
